THE GREAT TEST

Motion Graphic

BRIEF

This innovative design project sets forth the challenge of converting complex, research-based academic principles from the PGDipHE curriculum into highly accessible, visually stunning, short animated narratives. The mandate is to serve as a director of communication, meticulously distilling complex educational concepts into focused, dynamic motion graphics with a runtime of 40-180 seconds.  Beyond mere clarification, the objective is to craft intellectually stimulating content with maximum entertainment value, leveraging clever scripting, imaginative visual structures, and seamless transitions to guide insight into the subject. Ultimately, the infomotion serves a dual purpose: to demystify challenging ideas for potential and current students, sparking genuine curiosity and encouraging deeper reflection on their own knowledge gaps, while simultaneously positioning the postgraduate program as a leader in transformative higher education excellence.

DESIGN STRATEGY

"The Great Test" uses a playful, narrative-driven approach to translate the history of authentic assessment and evaluation into an engaging, character-led story. Instead of using traditional infographic methods, the story unfolds within an illustrated world where familiar historical moments are reimagined with humour and visual exaggeration, making a complex topic accessible and memorable. Each era, from early humans to Ancient Egypt and the Renaissance, is depicted through warm, painterly textures that create a timeless, storybook tone. As the narrative reaches its climax, the colour palette shifts to cooler, duller hues, visually expressing the growing seriousness and the dramatic change to modern assessment. These colour contrasts guide the viewer emotionally while maintaining a cohesive style.

The script strikes a balance between education and entertainment, mimicking a historical documentary with a calm and steady pace that allows the viewer to absorb information while maintaining a rhythm that engages viewers in the characters and their environments. The animation brings the story to life through expressive movement, focused camera angles and seamless transitions that link each era into a single flowing timeline. The pacing slows at the end, giving viewers time to absorb the final message. Overall, the design strategy focused on building an inviting, imaginative world that reframes the factual topic of assessment as a more emotional experience. Through cohesive illustration, thoughtful pacing and a narrative that bridges humour and insight, "The Great Test" aims to make the history of assessments not only understandable but genuinely enjoyable to watch.

PROCESS

The history of Authentic Assessment was researched as it has drastically changed over the years.

The narrative arc traces the evolution of assessment from early human survival to the rigid Prussian education system, establishing it as a more balanced and meaningful approach. This structure highlights how learning has transformed while reflecting on its history.
